Microsoft’s recent global outage sent shockwaves through various sectors, ranging from airlines to broadcasting, as operations ground to a halt on Friday. Interestingly, China appeared largely unaffected by the disruption, according to a report from the South China Post. The country’s critical sectors such as airlines and banking continued functioning smoothly, despite the widespread technical glitch.
Why China Wasn’t Affected By The Microsoft Outage?
The report attributes China’s resilience to the outage to its lesser dependence on external infrastructure to sustain daily operations. Chinese state media confirmed that airports in Beijing operated without disruption, contrasting sharply with experiences reported elsewhere.
However, not all corners of China were immune. A woman working at a foreign company in Shanghai recounted how her office was not spared from encountering the infamous blue screen error, with her screen displaying the message “Recovery. It looks like Windows didn’t load correctly.” This anecdote highlights that while major sectors may have been shielded, individual users still experienced intermittent disruptions.
Social media platforms in China, such as Xiaohongshu, echoed with complaints from users about encountering difficulties, particularly in accessing international hotels and other services during the outage.

The disruption was attributed to a software update released by CrowdStrike, a US-based cybersecurity firm, aimed at enhancing system security against emerging threats. However, a flaw in the update resulted in systems worldwide encountering the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), leading to sudden shutdowns and restarts.
Microsoft promptly addressed the issue in a blog post, expressing regret over the disruption caused to businesses and individuals alike. The company emphasized its commitment to assisting customers in safely restoring affected systems to normal operation.
Overall, while the global impact of the outage was profound, China’s unique infrastructure strategy appeared to provide a measure of insulation against the worst effects, although localized incidents were still reported.
