In a unanimous voice vote today, Om Birla, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Kota-Bundi, secured re-election as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, marking a historic milestone as the first BJP leader to hold the prestigious position for a second consecutive term.

Protem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab made the announcement, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House, Rahul Gandhi, congratulating and escorting Birla to the Speaker’s chair immediately after the election.

Ahead of the formal election proceedings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Union Minister Amit Shah and other leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had formally proposed Om Birla’s candidacy.

This move garnered overwhelming support from the NDA coalition, which secured 297 votes in favor of Birla.

On the other hand, the opposition coalition received 232 votes.

During the build-up to the election, there was a brief contention as Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT) proposed K Suresh as an alternative candidate from the opposition alliance.

However, the NDA’s numerical superiority ensured Birla’s re-election with a comfortable margin.

Om Birla, known for his impactful tenure during the Modi government’s second term, has been lauded for several key decisions as Speaker, underscoring his effectiveness in parliamentary affairs and legislative processes.

The re-election of Om Birla reflects the BJP’s confidence in his leadership and parliamentary acumen, as well as the NDA coalition’s unity in supporting his candidature.
