In a bid to revolutionize high school education and align it with evolving academic standards and career demands, the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (UP Board) has unveiled a sweeping reform of its curriculum for classes 9 and 10.
This significant overhaul, set to take effect in the forthcoming academic session, introduces a diversified approach aimed at enriching student learning experiences.
The new curriculum, detailed on the UP Board’s official website, expands the scope of study from six to ten subjects, adhering to the National Curriculum Framework (NCF)-2023 mandated by the Government of India.
This revision marks a departure from the conventional curriculum structure, integrating a broader array of subjects to foster comprehensive education.
Central to the reform is the inclusion of mandatory studies in three languages, with Hindi as a core requirement and options to select from Sanskrit, English, or any of the 17 other recognized Indian languages.
Mathematics, Science, and Social Science retain their status as foundational subjects, ensuring a well-rounded academic foundation across disciplines.
In addition to these core subjects, students will have the flexibility to choose from an assortment of interdisciplinary subjects such as Home Science, Anthropology, Commerce, NCC, Computer Science, Agriculture, and Environment.
Meanwhile, the curriculum also incorporates Art Education, offering avenues in disciplines like Painting, Music, Singing, and Instrumental Music.
Furthermore, Physical Education mandates the inclusion of one subject from Moral Education, Yoga, or Sports.
Dibyakant Shukla, Secretary of the UP Board, emphasized that the reform aims to transcend traditional streams of science, arts, commerce, and vocational education.
Fostering Practical Skills For Future Employability Through Holistic Approach
This holistic approach however seeks to equip students not only for higher education but also for diverse career paths and entrepreneurial ventures, fostering practical skills essential for future employability.
A significant alteration in the evaluation system accompanies the curriculum revamp, with the introduction of a 1000-mark high school mark sheet, replacing the previous 600-mark format.
Each subject will now be assessed out of 100 marks – 80 marks from examinations and 20 marks from internal assessments, comprising multiple-choice questions, proficiency-based inquiries, and descriptive assessments.
A new grading system ranging from A-1 to E will be implementing to ensure fairness and transparency in evaluation, with detailed grade descriptors being provided on the mark sheet.
