The Indian Navy conducted a series of successful anti-piracy operations in the Arabian Sea, rescuing over 100 individuals, including 27 Pakistanis and 30 Iranians. In a press conference held on Saturday, the Navy highlighted its proactive measures in safeguarding lives and thwarting piracy attempts in the region.
“Indian Navy has saved 110 lives, comprising 45 Indians and 65 international citizens, during Operation Sankalp and other missions. We’ve also responded to 13 attack incidents,” stated the Indian Navy.
To bolster security in the Arabian Sea, the Navy has deployed 10 warships equipped with advanced surveillance aircraft like P-8I and Sea Guardian drones. This strategic deployment aims to ensure the safety of both Indian and international cargo traffic from piracy and drone threats.
Furthermore, the Indian Air Force’s involvement was evident as its C-17 transport aircraft facilitated the airdropping of Marine Commandos and their equipment for Special Operations against sea pirates. This joint effort underscores the synergy between different branches of the Indian Armed Forces in combating maritime threats.

The successful conclusion of the high-stakes anti-piracy operation was marked by the handover of 35 Somali pirates to Mumbai Police after completing the necessary formalities. These pirates, captured by the Indian Navy, were intercepted as part of a coordinated effort involving naval destroyers, patrol ships, and aerial assets.
The operation culminated with the interception of the pirate ship Ruen approximately 260 nautical miles east of Somalia by INS Kolkata. Despite encountering resistance from the pirates, the Navy acted decisively, disabling the ship’s navigational systems and engaging in forceful negotiations, ultimately leading to the surrender of all 35 Somali pirates on March 16.
This successful operation not only neutralized a piracy threat but also ensured the safe evacuation of the original crew of MV Ruen without any casualties. The Indian Navy’s swift and effective response underscores its commitment to maritime security and the protection of vital sea lanes in the Arabian Sea.
