PM Modi’s Two-Day Assam Visit; Why It Is Significant For Northeast?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Assam, where he inaugurated a slew of developmental projects totaling ₹11,600 crore. This visit holds significant importance for the Northeast, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the region’s developmental needs. Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Modi participated in a roadshow before unveiling the various projects.

Key among the inaugurated projects is the Kamakhya temple corridor, with a budget of ₹498 crore, aimed at enhancing amenities for visitors to pilgrimage sites. This initiative is part of the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) scheme. Additionally, Modi focused on boosting sports infrastructure in the state, inaugurating an international standard sports stadium in Chandrapur and upgrading the Nehru stadium to FIFA standards.

A significant portion of the allocated funds went towards road infrastructure, with Modi laying the foundation stone for multiple road upgrade projects exceeding ₹3,400 crore. Under the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Corridor Connectivity, 43 roads and 38 bridges will undergo improvements. Furthermore, two 4-laning projects, Dolabari to Jamuguri and Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur, were inaugurated.

The Prime Minister also marked the commencement of infrastructure development for the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, as well as a medical college in Karimganj, indicating a commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities. These initiatives are anticipated to not only facilitate travel but also elevate the standard of living for the people of Assam.

Modi is scheduled to return to New Delhi following the completion of the program on Sunday afternoon, leaving behind a landscape of transformative projects that aim to uplift various facets of Assam’s development.
