On Tuesday, South Korean leader Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in the neck while speaking to the media in Busan.

According to the report, Lee was passing through a mob of media after inspecting the construction site of a new airport when a man in front of him lunged and struck him in the neck.

As bystanders hurried to help him, the 59-year-old was seen collapsing to the ground. One individual could be seen pressing a handkerchief on Lee’s neck.

Lee was sent to the Pusan National University Hospital for treatment.

“This is an act of terror against Lee and a serious threat to democracy that should never occur under any circumstances”, said Kwon Chil-Seung, an MP from Lee’s Democratic Party, outside the hospital.

“As to Lee’s condition, we are awaiting the medical staff’s assessment”, Kwon Chil-Seung added, calling for a thorough police probe into the attack.

Busan police stated that Lee suffered a one-centimetre laceration on his neck and remains conscious and the bleeding is minor.

The assailant has been arrested by the Busan police.
