Indian Navy Bolsters Maritime Security with 4 Destroyers and 1 Frigate in Response to Attacks on Merchant Vessels

To address the evolving threat landscape, the Indian Navy has mobilized task groups comprising destroyers and frigates for maritime security operations, emphasizing support to merchant vessels navigating the region.

In response to a series of recent attacks on merchant vessels, the Indian Navy has taken decisive action by deploying a formidable fleet in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden. A total of four destroyers, one frigate, and a P-8I long-range patrol aircraft have been strategically positioned to safeguard maritime interests.

Sources within the Indian Navy have disclosed that a Predator Drone has been enlisted for surveillance operations in the Arabian Sea, complemented by Dornier aircraft and helicopters tasked with maritime surveillance and security.

The move to fortify security in the north/central Arabian Sea and Gulf of Aden follows a string of attacks on merchant ships, including incidents involving the Maltese-flagged MV Ruen and the Liberian-flagged MV Chem Pluto. These assaults underscore the urgency of intensifying surveillance measures.

To address the evolving threat landscape, the Indian Navy has mobilized task groups comprising destroyers and frigates for maritime security operations, emphasizing support to merchant vessels navigating the region.

The deployment includes the P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), contributing to a comprehensive maritime domain awareness. The collaboration extends to effective surveillance of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with the Indian Navy working closely with the Coast Guard.

In a recent development on December 26, the Indian Navy expanded its presence by adding INS Mormugao to the already deployed warships, INS Kochi and INS Kolkata. This reinforcement was prompted by the attack on MV Chem Pluto by a drone along the Indian coastline in the Arabian Sea.
