A major issue rocked Telangana politics on December 9, 2023, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) voiced strong opposition to Akbaruddin Owaisi’s selection as the Telangana State Legislative Assembly’s pro-term speaker. The BJP was not happy about Akbaruddin Owaisi, an MLA from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), being sworn in as the Pro-term Speaker.

Telangana BJP head G Kishan Reddy expressed the BJP’s displeasure by stating unequivocally that he and other BJP MLAs will not take part in the oath-taking ceremony that Owaisi would be presiding over.

“Akbaruddin Owaisi’s nomination as Telangana Assembly Pro-term Speaker is opposed by the BJP.” The custom of designating senior MLAs for the position is broken by this. The BJP MLAs are not going to take an oath in front of this pro-term speaker. After the appointment of a Speaker, our MLAs will take an oath. We shall never form an alliance with the AIMIM. We’ll bring this up with the governor,” Reddy declared.

The BJP declared that its recently elected MLAs will meet with state party president G Kishan Reddy that same morning and subsequently pray at the Goddess Bhagya Lakshmi temple in Hyderabad, despite the party’s threat to boycott the oath-taking ceremony.

Political tensions in the state are heightened by the BJP’s reluctance to take part in the oath-taking ceremony conducted under Akbaruddin Owaisi’s supervision, despite the party holding eight seats in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

This occurrence has drawn notice and is a sign of the difficulties that the legislative assembly’s ability to function in the face of such glaring ideological divisions may face in the future.
