An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 rattles the southern Philippines

Tremor felt throughout the island

Philippines

The US Geological Survey reported a significant magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the southern Philippines on Friday, with local authorities warning of potential damage.

The USGS issued no tsunami warning after the quake occurred off the coast of Sarangani province on Mindanao’s major southern island at a depth of 78 kilometres (48 miles) at 0814 GMT.

Although there were no initial reports of casualties, the tremor was felt throughout the hilly island.

In the Philippines, which sits along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, an arc of strong seismic and volcanic activity that spans from Japan to Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin, earthquakes occur on a daily basis.
