Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, reported that at least three persons were killed in a Russian attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday.
Zaporizhzhia, an important Dnipro River city, is about 44 kilometres (27 miles) from the frontline.
“Zaporizhzhia. Another terrorist strike by Russians. Three people have been reported dead as of now”, Zelensky stated on social media.
“The rescue operation is currently underway”, he continued.
He shared a video of a largely destroyed church with a fire in its courtyard and smoke rising.
The video also showed another building that was extensively damaged and on fire, as well as a damaged basketball court.
Yuriy Malashko, the head of the Zaporizhzhia region, said Russia had struck a church and retail outlets in the city’s Shevchenkivskyi area.
“Medics are treating the wounded”, he explained.
“The blast wave smashed the windows of high-rise buildings”, he added.
