Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated to be absent from the forthcoming G20 leaders’ summit in India, according to insiders familiar with the matter in both India and China, who revealed this information to Reuters. Instead, Premier Li Qiang is likely to take the reins for Beijing at the meeting scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi.
Despite requests for comments, representatives from the Indian and Chinese foreign ministries remained reticent. Originally seen as a potential opportunity for Xi to engage with U.S. President Joe Biden and mend strained relations, this summit’s significance has grown.

The last time Xi and Biden met was on the margins of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November of the previous year. Concurrently, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his nonattendance, opting to dispatch Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in his stead. A senior Indian government official affirmed that “we are aware that the premier will come” as a replacement for Xi.
In China, a trio of sources including two foreign diplomats and one official from another G20 nation conveyed the likelihood of Xi’s absence. However, the reasons underpinning this decision have yet to be unveiled.
