On Thursday, John Kirby, the national security spokesman for the White House, Ukrainian forces are using US-supplied cluster bombs in the field as part of Kyiv’s battle against Russia.
At a news briefing, Mr. Kirby stated, “We have received some initial feedback from the Ukrainians, and they’re using them quite effectively”.
Cluster munitions, according to Mr. Kirby, are affecting Russian defensive formations and maneuvers.
Ukraine has stated that it will only deploy cluster bombs to concentrations of Russian enemy soldiers.
Cluster munitions, which are prohibited in over 100 countries, often disperse huge numbers of smaller bomblets that can kill in an indiscriminate manner over a large region. Those that do not explode represent a threat for decades.
In the fight sparked by Russia’s invasion in February 2022, each side accused the other of employing cluster bombs.
