President Joe Biden claimed on Wednesday that xenophobia from China to Japan and India is stifling their growth while arguing that migration has benefited the US economy.
“One of the reasons why our economy’s growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants”, Biden stated during a Washington fundraising event for his 2024 re-election campaign, which coincided with the opening of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
“Why is China stalling so badly economically, why is Japan having trouble, why is Russia, why is India, because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants. Immigrants are what makes us strong”, Biden continued.
The International Monetary Fund estimated last month that each country’s growth rate will show in 2024 compared to the previous year, ranging from 0.9% in highly developed Japan to 6.8% in growing India.
It predicts that the United States will grow at 2.7%, slightly faster than its 2.5% rate last year. Many economists attribute better-than-expected performance in part to migrants who have expanded its labor force.
Many American voters are concerned about irregular migration as they prepare for the presidential election in November.
Biden, who has slammed his Republican opponent Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant comment, has pushed to strengthen economic and political relations with countries such as Japan and India to counter China and Russia globally.
