US President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to mediate a solution to the long-standing Kashmir conflict following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.
His comments came after four days of escalating hostilities, triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack. However, Pakistan soon violated the ceasefire, casting doubt on the feasibility of lasting peace.
President Trump Praises Ceasefire Agreement Between India And Pakistan
US President took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to commend the ceasefire ‘understanding’ between India and Pakistan.
He acknowledged the agreement, which followed intense military exchanges, and praised the leadership of both nations for their quick action to halt further escalation.
In his post, Trump highlighted the potential devastating consequences of the conflict, noting, “I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much.”
Trump claimed credit for the de-escalation and suggested that the United States played a significant role in helping India and Pakistan reach the agreement.
He also proposed to mediate the Kashmir issue, saying, “I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”
Ceasefire Violations By Pakistan Shortly After Agreement
Despite the ceasefire agreement, Pakistani forces violated the understanding just hours after it took effect on Saturday evening.
Pakistani military launched drone attacks and shelled Indian territories in various sectors, including Akhnoor, Mendhar, RS Pura, Chamb, Bhimber, and Gurez.
Despite the truce being scheduled to begin at 5 PM, explosions rocked Srinagar.
India Responds To Ceasefire Breaches
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the media, confirming that Indian forces had responded ‘adequately’ to the Pakistani breaches.
Misri emphasised that although both sides had agreed to halt military actions on land, air, and sea, Pakistan’s actions had already compromised the ceasefire.
“This is a breach of understanding. The army is monitoring the situation closely,” Misri said.
He reiterated that the Indian government had taken serious note of Pakistan’s provocations, and the military stood prepared for any further violations.
Challenges To Long-Term Resolution
Although the international community welcomed the ceasefire, the violations cast doubt on the possibility of sustaining a peace agreement, particularly regarding the contentious Kashmir issue.
With Pakistan’s failure to uphold the truce, the likelihood of a long-term resolution remains uncertain, even with external mediation from figures like President Trump.
As tensions continue to rise, questions remain over the viability of any diplomatic efforts to resolve the Kashmir conflict, particularly if ceasefire violations persist.
