Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif Addresses Nation Amidst Ceasefire Breach

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the nation on Saturday evening after India and Pakistan agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire.

The agreement, aimed at halting hostilities on land, air, and sea, came into effect at 5 PM IST following a conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.

However, just hours after the agreement, Pakistani armed forces violated the terms by initiating provocative firing and launching drone attacks along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB), casting serious doubts over Pakistan’s commitment to peace.

Sharif Praises Troops Amid Border Violations

In his televised address, Prime Minister Sharif praised the Pakistani military’s ‘valour’ and portrayed the ceasefire agreement as a responsible decision taken in the interest of regional peace.

“As a responsible state, Pakistan responded positively to the ceasefire to safeguard the lives of millions,” Sharif stated.

His remarks, however, appeared disconnected from the unfolding ground realities, as Pakistan continued its aggressive actions along the border while the speech was underway.

Pakistani Drones Violate Airspace; Blackouts Imposed

Late Saturday night, Indian security forces reported multiple ceasefire breaches by Pakistan.

Pakistani drones crossed into Indian airspace from Jammu and Kashmir to Bhuj in Gujarat, prompting India to impose blackouts in border areas, including Srinagar and cities in Punjab and Rajasthan, as a precautionary measure.

Security forces remain on high alert as air defence systems actively intercept incoming drones.

India Confirms Agreement And Upcoming Talks

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the ceasefire agreement was reached through a phone call initiated by Pakistan’s DGMO at 3:35 PM IST. Both sides agreed to halt all military actions from 5 pm IST.

“Instructions have been issued on both sides to enforce this understanding,” Misri said. “The Directors General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12 at 12 noon.”

Despite Pakistan’s immediate violations, Misri reiterated India’s commitment to upholding peace while ensuring firm retaliation to any provocation.

Global Community Welcomes Ceasefire

International leaders and organisations welcomed the ceasefire agreement.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the development through an official statement.

China, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Germany, and the European Union also expressed support, calling the agreement a vital step towards de-escalation and regional stability.

Germany termed the ceasefire ‘the first important step out of the escalation spiral’, while the EU urged both nations to respect the understanding and pursue dialogue.

Pakistan Thanks Global Mediators Despite Breach

In his address, Sharif thanked US President Trump, China, Saudi Arabia, and other nations for facilitating the ceasefire talks.

However, Pakistan’s continued aggression on the ground starkly contrasted with Sharif’s diplomatic overtures.

As tensions remain high, the next round of DGMO-level talks on May 12 will be crucial in determining whether both countries can honour the ceasefire and steer the region back toward stability.
