The US Navy will deploy its first shore-based advanced nuclear microreactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane in Indiana by September 2028. The facility will provide continuous power independent of the commercial electricity grid.

The Micro Modular Reactor will become Indiana’s first power-producing nuclear reactor, according to the Department of War.

The commercially owned and operated reactor will support critical operations during physical, cyber and grid disruptions.

NWS Crane serves as a major US defence technology, weapons research and manufacturing centre.

The Army’s Janus Program, the Navy and other Department of War offices are implementing the project with Indiana.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of War is rapidly deploying next-generation energy solutions. We are strengthening capabilities for our warfighters,” said Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering.

Emil Michael said the initiative would strengthen resilient infrastructure and expand the American nuclear industrial base.

“Our standard is to field and deploy capability within 24 months or less,” said Mike Dodd, Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies.

Mike Dodd said the programme would advance nuclear power deployment, reinforce domestic industrial capacity and provide a strategic advantage.

Brendan Rogers, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, said the reactor would strengthen the base against emerging physical, cyber and grid threats.

The project follows more than a year of coordination with Indiana officials.

Senator Jim Banks helped advance it, with support from Governor Mike Braun, Senator Todd Young and Representatives Erin Houchin and Mark Messmer.

Crane marks the first step in a wider effort to deploy advanced nuclear energy across military installations.

The programme aims to ensure reliable power, strengthen the nuclear supply chain and rebuild industrial capacity for national defence.
