Trump Orders Import Bans On Canadian Alcohol, Dairy And Motorcycles As Trade Row Escalates

US President Donald Trump has ordered import bans on a broad range of Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motorcycles as his administration intensifies its trade confrontation with Canada.

The new bans will take effect at 12:01 AM Eastern time on September 29, according to White House proclamations.

Canadian goods imported before the deadline but not cleared for consumption will remain subject to the existing 50 per cent duty.

A senior administration official said the measures aim to counter Canadian retaliation, protect American producers and restore what the White House considers a fair trading environment.

The bans will cover Canadian trade worth several billion dollars but represent around 0.1 per cent of total US consumption, according to the official.

The prohibited alcoholic products include packaged beer, sparkling wine, cider, whisky, bourbon, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, brandy, liqueurs and other spirits.

The restrictions cover non-alcoholic beer and several dairy-related products, including whey protein concentrates, modified whey, fluid whey and dried whey.

A separate proclamation will prohibit Canadian motorcycles and cycles equipped with engines larger than 800cc.

The administration will revise its existing 50 per cent tariff list from September 15.

The revised list adds categories including paper, iron and steel structures, aluminium products, metal fittings, golf carts, small motor vehicles, outboard motorboats, furniture, mattresses and lamps.

The White House removed several goods from the tariff list after business feedback.

Trump’s planned 50 per cent tariff on Canadian vehicles from January 1 remains.

Despite the escalation, talks with Canada continue. The duties, introduced in July, resumed on August 22.
