External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence in the enduring strength of the India-US relationship, regardless of the 2024 US presidential election results. Speaking at a joint press briefing with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s ties with the US had seen “steady progress” over the last five presidencies and assured that this growth would continue.
As millions of Americans voted to elect their next president, Jaishankar responded to questions about potential shifts in US foreign policy. He noted that the US-India relationship has flourished under both Democratic and Republican leadership, including during former President Trump’s term.
Addressing concerns about the future of the Quad, Jaishankar highlighted that the group, which includes the US, India, Japan, and Australia, actually revived in 2017 under Trump’s leadership. He recalled how the Quad elevated its ministerial-level engagement during this period, even meeting in person in Tokyo in 2020 despite the pandemic.
Wong echoed Jaishankar’s confidence, stating that Australia views the Quad as a crucial grouping with shared interests that will retain its significance, irrespective of the US election outcome. She emphasized the Quad’s role in promoting a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific, countering regional challenges from China.
Both ministers underscored that the Quad will continue as a valuable forum for strategic discussions among the four nations. With shared priorities, they see the coalition as essential for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The US, Japan, India, and Australia formally established the Quad in 2017 to counter China’s growing influence. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue supports a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, with each nation committed to preserving regional stability.
