US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to set up a bilateral channel to communicate about incidents involving artificial intelligence, according to a White House fact sheet released after their meeting in Washington.
The leaders agreed to use ‘super intelligence’ (SI) as the term for the technology and created a US-China SI Dialogue to exchange views on its risks and benefits.
The White House said the next discussion would take place no later than November 2026.
The White House said the presidents covered international issues involving North Korea, Russia and Iran, but did not provide details about their discussion of North Korea.
On Iran, the two leaders agreed that the country should not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. They said no country or organisation should impose tolls on international waterways, although the fact sheet did not mention the Strait of Hormuz by name.
Trump asked Xi to expand China’s production of refined petroleum products to help steady global supplies, the document said.
The governments activated the bilateral Board of Trade and Board of Investment, which they had established during their previous summit in Beijing in May.
The trade board will address commerce in non-sensitive goods, while the investment board will provide a government-level forum for investment matters.
The White House said the countries had agreed on recommendations to offer more favourable tariff treatment to US$30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods in each direction. They set up a working group to address barriers to agricultural market access.
China plans to purchase at least 10 million metric tonnes of coal from the United States in each of 2027 and 2028.
The two sides are continuing talks on US concerns about shortages of rare earths and other critical minerals, aiming to return shipments to suitable levels.
