A U.S. official stated Tuesday that the United States believes its latest air strikes on Sunday targeting Iran-linked militia in Syria killed up to seven people.
The casualties would be the first since the United States began retaliatory strikes last month against militias blamed for attacks on American personnel at sites in Iraq and Syria. The other strikes have targeted vacant facilities, including those used for armament storage.
Since October 17, US and coalition soldiers have been attacked at least 55 times in Iraq and Syria, wounding 59 individuals, all of whom have returned to duty.
According to the statement reportedly issued by the militant groups responsible, the attacks are in retribution for U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza war.
The United States official stated the victims were killed during one of the strikes on the training facility near the city of Al Bukamal.
“A second hit, which the Pentagon claims was carried out at a safe house in the city of Mayadeen, may have killed another person”, the official added.
“The U.S. military assesses that no women or children were killed in the strikes”, the official continued.
