Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warned world leaders on Saturday that the world was facing an unprecedented climate emergency when speaking at the G20 Summit in New Delhi.
“The lack of commitment to the environment has led us to an unprecedented climate emergency”, Lula stated during the two-day meeting in New Delhi. “Droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires are becoming more frequent”, he continued.
G20 leaders will meet this weekend amid what is expected to be the hottest year in human history, but chances are slim that the fragmented grouping can agree on bold measures to address the catastrophe.
Failure to do so might dampen expectations ahead of the key COP28 climate meetings, which begin in the United Arab Emirates in November.
In July, G20 energy ministers failed to even mention coal in their final statement, let alone agree on a phase-down strategy, and no progress was made on the renewables goal.
G20 countries contribute 85 percent of global GDP and a comparable amount of global climate warming emissions, making G20 action critical to significant progress.
