United States President Prepares South Korea Visit With Possible Xi Jinping Talks

United States President Donald Trump and senior advisers are quietly planning a visit to South Korea in October to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju.

The gathering, running from late October into early November, will offer officials an opportunity for high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, although they have not yet confirmed a firm schedule.

US administration sources say the trip also offers a chance to encourage new economic investment into the United States, following similar outreach on recent visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Possible Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines

White House officials indicate that discussions at the summit are expected to focus on trade, defence and civil nuclear cooperation.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung formally invited the US leader to attend, suggesting the setting could also create conditions for another face-to-face meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un.

President Trump has publicly expressed willingness to meet Kim if the opportunity arises, telling reporters he believes dialogue could improve relations.

The expected trip comes at a delicate moment in Washington’s ties with both Beijing and Pyongyang.

President Xi recently hosted Kim, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Beijing during a military parade, which President Trump criticised online despite his own claims of strong personal relationships with the leaders involved.

Any meeting with President Xi would take place against the backdrop of ongoing US-China trade negotiations.

President Trump temporarily paused the tariffs imposed by both sides earlier this year through an executive order, while top economic advisers from each country continue talks in Europe.

Analysts view the October summit in South Korea as a significant test of the United States President’s ability to balance diplomacy, trade policy and security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
