Russia’s defence ministry said Wednesday that three Ukrainian drones were shot down southwest of Moscow, the latest in a wave of aerial attacks near the capital.
On Telegram, the ministry wrote, “Ukraine launched the attack at 5:00 am (0200 GMT) using three unmanned aerial vehicles on objects in the Kaluga region”.
“All UAVs were detected and destroyed in a timely manner by Russian air defence systems”, the ministry added.
According to the Kaluga’s governor, the drones were shot down in the south of the province, a few hundred kilometres southwest of Moscow.
“There are no consequences for people and infrastructure”, remarked Vladislav Shapsha on Telegram.
This is at least the fifth air attack this month over the Kaluga region that Russia claims to have foiled.
Russian officials earlier stated that drone attacks in the region were intercepted on August 12, 10, 7, and 3.
Until a recent spate of strikes, the city and its environs had not been targeted during Ukraine’s conflict, which began more than a year ago.
In recent weeks, two drone strikes over Moscow’s financial district were foiled, each causing minimal damage to high-rise buildings’ facades. Drones were shot down near the Kremlin in May.
On July 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that war was on its way to Russia, with symbolic centres and military bases becoming targets.
