Russia launched a massive missile assault against Ukraine overnight, hitting four power stations in the latest onslaught aimed at the country’s energy supplies, Kyiv officials claimed on Saturday.
Moscow has undertaken some of its largest-ever strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent months, knocking down a significant portion of production and causing blackouts and energy rationing throughout the country.
Moscow reported that Ukraine launched one of its biggest-ever drone strikes overnight, firing over 60 drones at southern Russia. Kyiv claimed to have targeted two oil refineries and a military airbase.
The Ukrainian army stated, “Russian armed forces staged another massive missile attack on Ukraine”.
German Galushchenko, Energy Minister, said, “The enemy has once again attacked the country’s energy infrastructure. In particular, facilities in Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv regions were attacked. There is damage to equipment”.
The Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions are in western Ukraine, bordering the EU and hundreds of miles from the battle lines.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Moscow fired 34 missiles, 21 of which were shot down.
Kyiv claims Moscow is stepping up its air and land attacks ahead of nationwide celebrations on May 9, when Russia commemorates its World War II victory, and while Ukraine awaits the arrival of critical US weapons.
