A military coup in Niger led to a temporary reduction in the British embassy’s staff, the United Kingdom announced on Thursday.
The foreign office released a statement saying, “The British Embassy in Niamey is temporarily reducing the number of its staff due to the security situation”.
Following violent protests outside its embassy, France urged the junta on Thursday to ensure the safety of its mission and diplomatic personnel in Niamey, while the United States ordered the partial evacuation of diplomatic staff on Wednesday.
The putschists have accused France, the former colonial master of Niger, of attempting to interfere militarily in the West African country.
