Officials Rescue 3 Dogs And Caged Birds From Train’s Bathroom En Route To Siliguri

In West Bengal, a distressing discovery was made when numerous caged birds were found inside the bathroom of a general compartment on the Kanchankanya Express train from Kolkata to Siliguri. Alongside the birds, three dogs and various fish were also being transported. Prompt action was taken by the forest staff from Bagdogra range, who rescued the animals upon receiving the information.

Both the birds and dogs were taken to the Bagdogra Forest Department office, and an investigation is currently underway. The authorities are questioning the individual responsible for transporting these animals, but it is uncertain whether a case will be filed under the Wildlife Act at this stage. The outcome of the investigation will determine further actions and decisions.

This incident comes after a similar one in Tamil Nadu, where the Race Course Police rescued two yellow-crested cockatoos from the Great Bombay Circus, which lacked a permit from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). The rescued birds are now undergoing rehabilitation at the WVS International Training Centre in the Nilgiris.

Previously, a case was filed against the circus’s proprietor and manager under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, following a complaint from G Prasanna, founder of People for Cattle in India. The complaint alleged that the circus used animals, including birds and dogs, for performances without proper registration under the performance animal registration certificate issued by the AWBI. Such actions are in violation of animal welfare regulations.
