Trump To Speak With Putin On Tuesday; Discuss Ukraine Ceasefire

CNN reported that US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday his plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

He expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, stating they might have ‘something to announce’ regarding the US ceasefire proposal for the Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way back to the White House from a weekend at Mar-a-Lago, Trump stated, “We’re doing pretty well, I think, with Russia. We’ll see if we have something to announce, maybe by Tuesday. I’ll be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday.”

“A lot of work’s been done over the weekend, we want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,” US President asserted.

Trump further noted, “I think we have a lot of it already discussed, very much, by both sides.”

The US President mentioned that the negotiations would cover land and power plants, noting that the land situation has significantly changed since the war.

Additionally, Trump remarked that talks have already touched upon the division of certain assets.

As reported by CNN, the Kremlin recently confirmed that US negotiators are set to visit Russia for further discussions but withheld specifics on the participants.

Trump-Putin Ceasefire Talks & Ukraine’s Position

Trump’s announcement follows his recent claim that Ukraine had agreed to a US-backed 30-day ceasefire plan.

Ukraine has indicated its willingness to implement an immediate and temporary ceasefire for 30 days, with the possibility of extension through mutual agreement.

However, the truce remains contingent on Russia’s acceptance and its parallel implementation.

The US has also pledged to lift the suspension on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Ukraine.

Responding to Trump’s statement, Putin acknowledged Russia’s agreement with the proposal in principle.

However, he attached stringent conditions and demanded concessions from Ukraine, alleging that the Ukrainian government played a role in triggering the war.

On Friday, Putin remarked on Russia’s efforts to mend relations with the US, which he claimed had deteriorated significantly under the previous American administration.

He suggested that diplomatic progress was underway with the Trump administration.

“Overall, the situation is starting to move. Let’s see what comes out of this,” Putin noted.
