Three Mutuals, One Relationship: What PM Modi Told Xi Jinping About India-China Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President Xi Jinping that India and China should remain sensitive to each other’s core concerns during their recent bilateral meeting.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the details at a media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday. He said several issues featured in the September 12 discussions on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit.

Jaiswal said PM Modi stressed that both countries should approach their relationship through three mutuals: mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.

PM Modi and Xi noted steady progress in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. They agreed to adopt a strategic and long-term perspective and emphasised that differences should not become disputes.

PM Modi highlighted the importance of peace and tranquillity along the border. He called for strict adherence to existing agreements and understandings on border matters.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to finding a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. They linked the process to the broader political relationship and long-term interests of both peoples.

The leaders reviewed progress in people-to-people relations. They backed stronger cultural exchanges, business connections and greater mobility between India and China.

On trade and economic ties, they called for addressing structural trade imbalances and supply-chain concerns. They stressed meaningful and predictable market access.

Both sides agreed to expand common ground on regional and global issues while working together to address emerging challenges.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other officials attended the meeting.
