US President Donald Trump said he plans to officially rename artificial intelligence ‘superintelligence’, while backing industry self-regulation and stressing the need to maintain America’s technological lead over China.
Speaking at a meeting and luncheon with technology leaders, Trump said the administration would sign a document announcing the proposed change. He argued that the term ‘artificial’ did not accurately describe the technology and said the administration would use the abbreviation ‘SI’.
Trump linked the proposed name change to a broader push to expand artificial intelligence while retaining US technological leadership. He praised the executives attending the meeting and said the technology industry could eventually become larger than the Industrial Revolution.
Trump addressed the question of regulation, backing greater self-regulation by technology companies alongside existing laws and enforcement mechanisms. He cited the Department of Justice and the FBI as institutions that could intervene when companies or individuals engage in wrongdoing.
The President did not outline specific new regulatory requirements or explain how industry self-regulation would work.
At the launch of America.gov, Trump said technology companies should operate honestly and remain trustworthy while allowing government agencies to intervene when necessary.
Trump said the proposed approach would allow the technology sector to continue expanding while maintaining oversight through existing institutions. He further stressed the importance of protecting America’s technological advantage as competition with China intensifies.
The US President said US technology companies should continue developing advanced systems while protecting sensitive knowledge and expertise.
Trump’s remarks reflected his administration’s emphasis on technological growth, industry participation and maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence.
