Trump Flags Iranian Fire On Foreign Ships; Calls For Allied Backing In Strait Mission

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of targeting vessels linked to third countries, heightening concern over maritime safety in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump said Iranian forces had opened fire in connection with ‘Project Freedom’, a US-led effort designed to safeguard commercial shipping lanes. He cited an incident involving a cargo vessel from South Korea, suggesting that nations not directly involved in the dispute are now at risk.

The US President also pressed allies to take a more active role, indicating that Seoul could consider joining the operation. His remarks point to Washington’s broader attempt to internationalise the security mission.

Trump further claimed that US naval forces had engaged Iranian units at sea, saying several fast-moving boats were destroyed during the encounter. Despite the flare-up, he noted that disruption to shipping traffic remains limited, with no widespread damage reported beyond the South Korean-linked vessel.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine will likely deliver a formal military update in a media briefing.

The developments come as the United States steps up its naval presence in the region, citing the need to ensure freedom of navigation through one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

A substantial portion of global oil shipments passes through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.

Iran, meanwhile, has repeatedly cautioned against foreign military deployments near its coastline, warning that such actions could escalate tensions further.
