A fragile standoff between Iran and the United States has edged closer to escalation following renewed military activity in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), Iran launched multiple cruise missiles and drones towards vessels navigating the Strait. US naval forces intercepted the incoming threats while also neutralising several Iranian speedboats that were deemed a danger to maritime traffic.
The developments follow Washington’s initiative, informally referred to as ‘Project Freedom’, aimed at enabling safe passage for ships stranded in the region.
Beyond the Strait itself, the situation appears to be widening geographically. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates reported drone strikes targeting the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, with air defence systems deployed to counter further aerial threats.
In Oman, state media confirmed that a residential complex near the Strait was hit, leaving two foreign nationals injured.
Reports carried by Iranian state media said Tehran directed its strikes near US warships, not at them. This suggested a measured and controlled approach.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would act decisively against any vessel attempting to bypass restrictions in the Strait. It also rejected claims that any of its boats were destroyed.
US officials disputed Iranian assertions that American ships had been hit. Admiral Brad Cooper stated that vessels from dozens of countries remain stalled in the waterway, with efforts underway to restore commercial movement. He noted that at least two US-flagged ships had already transited safely.
Trump’s Statement
Separately, US President Donald Trump said a South Korean vessel was targeted. He added that no reports confirm widespread damage to shipping.
The crisis has also raised legal concerns. Iran’s reported demand for transit fees has drawn criticism from Washington. The United Nations has said such measures conflict with international law.
With no progress in diplomatic talks, both sides remain entrenched.
Observers warn that further attacks could trigger a broader phase of conflict. Earlier hostilities were only temporarily paused under a ceasefire agreement.
