US President Donald Trump has claimed that Russia and Ukraine have accepted a temporary three-day ceasefire, raising hopes of a limited pause in the war that has devastated both countries for more than two years.
In a statement, Trump said the proposed halt in fighting would run from 9 May to 11 May, aligning with Russia’s annual Victory Day events marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
The US President stated that military operations would pause during the period, describing the agreement as a suspension of active battlefield action.
Trump also revealed that both nations had consented to a major prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side.
The US President said he personally pushed for the arrangement and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for supporting the proposal.
Trump suggested the development could become an important breakthrough in efforts to end the conflict, adding that discussions aimed at securing a broader settlement are still underway.
If carried out, the pause would represent one of the largest coordinated breaks in combat since the war intensified.
Earlier ceasefire attempts have frequently collapsed within a short period.
The announcement arrives as international pressure continues to grow for renewed diplomatic engagement, despite ongoing clashes across several regions.
Victory Day remains one of Russia’s most significant national observances. Ukraine also commemorates the Second World War, although Kyiv has increasingly moved away from Soviet-era traditions in recent years.
