Spain expelled two U.S. embassy employees accused of bribing Spanish intelligence officers for secrets.
There was no quick confirmation from either country, which is an ally and generally shares intelligence.
According to the report, the operative of the Spanish intelligence agency (CNI), the chief of the area, and his assistant were detained two months ago and their case was sealed by a judge.
Spanish officials summoned US Ambassador Julissa Reynoso, who stated that she knew nothing about the situation and apologized.
The two American personnel were then asked to depart by Spain’s defence and foreign ministries.
A US diplomat in Spain claimed Reynoso would not comment.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry and the top court declined to comment, while the CNI and Defence Ministry did not react quickly to demands for comment.
