The interior ministry claimed on Saturday that a Russian missile targeted a key area in the ancient northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, killing seven people and injuring 90 others.

People were on their way to church to celebrate a religious holiday when the strike occurred, according to the ministry, which added that 12 of the injured were youngsters and ten were police officers.

On Telegram, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote, “A Russian missile hit right in the centre of the city, in our Chernihiv. A square, the polytechnic university, a theatre”.

“An ordinary Saturday, which Russia turned into a day of pain and loss”, Zelenskiy continued.

A short video that accompanied Zelenskiy’s post showed rubble strewn over a square in front of the regional play theatre, where parked cars were severely damaged. The video also showed a slouched figure inside an automobile.

Chernihiv is a green city with centuries-old churches located about 145 kilometres (90 miles) north of Kyiv. According to the interior ministry, the strike wrecked the roof of the theatre.

As part of the invasion that began in February last year, Russia used missiles and drones to assault Ukrainian cities far from the front lines.

The Ukrainian air force reported early Saturday that it had shot down 15 of 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Moscow in a nocturnal strike.
