Both sides seem to be playing double game
Russia-Ukraine war: In a sudden move, China has called for a truce and initiated peace talks between the belligerent nations.
Apparently, there is no end in sight of the Russian war on Ukraine even after entering into the second year. After witnessing the killing of tens of thousands of people, forcing millions of people to flee their homes with flattened cities the bloody conflict may take a far bigger toll now if not stopped soon.
Though it certainly is going to be a huge loss for Ukraine even if the war stops now for Russia now controls about a 5th of Ukrainian geographical territory. On the other hand, the prospects for peace clearly look bleak, where President Putin is seen signaling a desire to double down on the conflict and before him, President Zelenskyy appears maintaining a hard line as far as a potential peace talk is concerned.
UNGA resolution demands peace
While overwhelmingly adopting a resolution on the first anniversary of the war, the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) now demands that Moscow withdraw Russian troops and stop the fighting. In the voting on it, there were only 32 abstentions along with 141 votes in favour of the resolution. Russia achieved support from 6 countries voting for – NO and the close ally China opted for abstaining on the vote.
War of words between US and China
A significant simultaneous statement by China also has a message within the words – ‘Sending weapons to Ukraine is not going to bring peace!’ The truth countering this statement had surfaced earlier this month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was heard saying that China is constantly active in providing ammunition to Russia fueling its war on Ukraine.

Biden to preside G7 meet
The other development on the part of American President, a virtual meet is going to be organisex with G7 leaders where Joe Biden will be holding presiding chair and Zelenskyy will be marking the war anniversary announcing new sanctions. The sanctions obviously are going to target those aiding Russia’s war effort, as revealed by the White House.
