Russian authorities reported that a passenger train derailed in the country’s Far North on Wednesday, injuring at least 20 people.
The train was traveling from Vorkuta, located above the Arctic Circle, to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in the country’s south.
It derailed near the small town of Inta in the Komi Republic, which has a harsh climate and a sparse population.
Vladimir Uyba, the head of the Komi Republic, stated, “There were 215 passengers on the train, with 20 people injured, three in a serious condition”.
Uyba went on to say that the train’s five last carriages derailed, but authorities did not immediately provide a reason for the tragedy.
Uyba stated that he was flying out to the accident scene.
Russian state media broadcast images of several carriages lying on their sides in a ditch by a forest.
The Vorkuta-Novorossiysk train takes almost five days to complete its journey.
Transport accidents are not uncommon in Russia, but less so on trains, despite the country having the world’s largest rail network.
Since Moscow initiated its Ukraine offensive, Russia has faced a wave of sabotage attacks on its railways, which are utilized by the army to transfer equipment to Ukraine.
