On Tuesday, Russia said it had accidentally attacked a village in its southern Voronezh area near Ukraine but there had been no casualties.
The tragedy occurred on the same day that Russia launched a large-scale missile attack against Ukraine.
It is not the first such occurrence in Moscow’s nearly two-year-long Ukraine offensive.
In a statement, the Russian army stated, “On January 2, 2024, at around 9 am Moscow time (GMT), during a flight of the Aerospace Forces, an abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition occurred over the village of Petropavlovka in the Voronezh region”.
“There are no casualties”, the statement reads.
Petropavlovka is located approximately 150 kilometres (93 miles) east of the Ukraine border.
According to the ministry, the disaster destroyed six private houses.
“An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway. A commission is working on the ground to assess the nature of the damage and provide assistance to restoring houses”, the statement continued.
Alexander Gusev, governor of the Voronezh region, stated that some of Petropavlovka’s residents have been relocated to temporary housing.
He further stated that there were no injuries but that destruction was recorded in seven households.
In April last year, the Russian army admitted that one of its jets dropped a bomb in its city of Belgorod, close to the Ukrainian border, resulting a blast.
