Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on countries to settle conflicts through peaceful negotiations and diplomatic channels instead of relying on warfare.
While addressing the 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Bishkek, PM Modi said instability in one region can create consequences across the globe.
The Prime Minister said the ongoing crisis in West Asia extends beyond the region and could disrupt international energy supplies, maritime commerce and global supply chains. He pointed out that nations in the Global South often face a disproportionate impact when such disruptions occur, underlining the importance of peaceful solutions to conflicts.
PM Modi identified narcotics trafficking as a danger to young people as well as regional stability. He welcomed SCO efforts to create mechanisms for tackling security threats, organised crime, information security and drug trafficking, while calling for these initiatives to produce effective coordination and prompt action.
Highlighting the importance of reliable connectivity, PM Modi said stronger links between markets could increase trade and create fresh avenues for economic development. He maintained that such initiatives must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, describing the principle as central to the SCO Charter.
The Prime Minister described terrorism as an enduring challenge for the international community and urged countries to target the networks that enable terrorist activities.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s development and providing humanitarian assistance to its people. He presented India’s SCO approach through three key priorities – Security, Connectivity and Opportunity.
The Prime Minister said the organisation should use the next 25 years to turn its long-standing tradition of dialogue and cooperation into practical outcomes that benefit people across the Eurasian region.
