PM Modi To BRICS Leaders: No Place For Double Standards On Terrorism, Terror Financing

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. He called for the firm support of all BRICS members in combating terrorism, stating there can be no “double standards” on this serious issue.

“We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war,” PM Modi asserted. He drew parallels between the global response to COVID-19 and the potential for collective action against terrorism. “We must work together on the long-pending matter in the UN of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,” he added.

People-Centric Approach

In his remarks, PM Modi stated that BRICS must adopt a people-centric approach. He highlighted that the organization should not be seen as “divisive” but as a platform that serves humanity’s interests.

“Our meeting occurs at a time of pressing challenges: wars, economic uncertainty, climate change, and terrorism,” he noted. He urged leaders to focus on preventing inflation, ensuring food security, and addressing energy and health security.

Emerging Global Challenges

The Prime Minister acknowledged emerging challenges like cyber deepfakes and disinformation, stressing that BRICS can play a positive role in tackling these issues.

The BRICS alliance, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, welcomed four new members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE—on January 1, 2024. PM Modi expressed India’s readiness to evolve with BRICS and embrace new partner countries. He reiterated that all decisions should be made by consensus and respect the founding members’ views.

PM Modi also addressed the need for reform in global institutions like the UN Security Council and the World Trade Organization. He stated that the hopes and aspirations of the Global South must remain a priority for BRICS.
