On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address a special session of Guyana’s Parliament, marking a significant milestone in his global diplomatic journey.
This address will be the 14th occasion on which PM Modi will speak at a foreign legislative body, solidifying his position as the Indian Prime Minister with the most foreign parliamentary engagements.
Ahead of this momentous occasion, PM Modi was conferred with ‘The Order of Excellence’, Guyana’s highest civilian honour, recognizing his outstanding contributions to international relations and India’s global stature.
This recognition highlights the growing diplomatic ties between India and Guyana, reflecting the Prime Minister’s efforts to strengthen India’s influence across continents.
With this address, PM Modi will double the record set by his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, who addressed seven foreign parliaments.
Other Indian leaders, including Indira Gandhi (four addresses), Jawaharlal Nehru (three addresses), and Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee (two addresses), have also delivered speeches in foreign legislative chambers.
Since taking office in 2014, PM Modi has addressed parliaments across the world, from Australia and Fiji to the United States and several African and Asian countries.
His speeches have often focused on India’s global aspirations, its growing economic influence, and fostering stronger international partnerships.
PM Modi’s addresses transcend continents, from his early engagements in Bhutan and Nepal to his recent remarks at the US Congress in 2023.
Notable speeches include his addresses in the UK, Mauritius, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Afghanistan, and the Maldives.
His engagement with foreign parliaments has however played a pivotal role in advancing India’s foreign policy and fostering closer ties with key global regions.
In Guyana, this latest address will not only serve as a key diplomatic moment but also as a symbol of India’s strengthened relationship with the Caribbean and Latin America.
The Prime Minister’s efforts in reaching out to these regions further reflect his broader vision of elevating India’s position on the global stage, building on diplomatic ties, economic partnerships, and cultural diplomacy.
PM Modi’s address in Guyana’s Parliament will be one for the history books, reinforcing the growing diplomatic engagement between India and nations around the world.
As he accepts the ‘Order of Excellence’, PM Modi’s leadership continues to resonate globally, cementing his legacy as one of India’s most prominent international statesmen.
