Prime Minister Narendra Modi met South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, reaffirming their commitment to deepening the Special Strategic Partnership between India and the Republic of Korea.
This engagement marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral ties in a range of critical sectors.
The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions focusing on mutual interests, including trade, investment, green hydrogen, advanced technologies, and shipbuilding.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “President Mr. Lee Jae-myung and I had a very good meeting in Canada. India and the Republic of Korea seek to work together in sectors like commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen, shipbuilding and more.@Jaemyung_Lee”
The Prime Minister’s Office also echoed this sentiment, highlighting that both leaders had a productive exchange aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership.
President Lee expressed hope for elevating ties to a new level ‘across the board’.
He also conveyed heartfelt condolences for the victims of the recent Air India crash, which PM Modi gratefully acknowledged.
With bilateral trade reaching $27.5 billion last year and around 550 South Korean companies operating in India, the leaders discussed expanding economic collaboration.
President Lee underlined the importance of high-level communication to further enhance cooperation in the defence, arms industry, advanced manufacturing, and cultural sectors.
According to the South Korean Presidential Office, both leaders recognised the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges and agreed to promote such initiatives to deepen mutual understanding.
India and South Korea share key strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, including regional security and supply chain resilience.
PM Modi invited President Lee to visit India, a gesture appreciated by the South Korean leader.
South Korea remains one of India’s largest investors in sectors such as automobiles and electronics.
According to Chosun Daily, South Korean conglomerates view India as a vital hub in the evolving global supply chain, especially as geopolitical tensions rise between major powers.
Experts note that the alignment between Korea’s ‘Act Southern’ and India’s ‘Act East’ policies has created new momentum for economic engagement.
