PM Modi Hails Strong India-Canada Ties During G7 Summit Meeting With PM Mark Carney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on Tuesday, where both leaders affirmed their commitment to democratic values, humanitarian cooperation, and global economic progress.

PM Carney described India’s presence at the G7 as a ‘testament to its importance on the global stage and Prime Minister Modi’s leadership’.

PM Carney underscored India’s key role in tackling global issues such as energy security, artificial intelligence, the energy transition, and counter-terrorism.

He acknowledged India’s increasing relevance in global supply chains, calling it “the fifth-largest economy and the most populous nation in the world”.

PM Modi gratefully accepted the invitation and expressed his honour at returning to Canada after his 2015 visit.

Reflecting on India’s leadership of the G20, he stated that the ideas and groundwork laid during the summit had found new shape and direction within the G7.

He reaffirmed India’s commitment to humanitarian values, global cooperation, and democratic ideals.

“India and Canada share strong democratic traditions,” Prime Minister Modi noted. “Our nations are deeply connected through economic cooperation, people-to-people ties, and shared global priorities.”

Growing economic partnership

During the bilateral talks, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the growing investment from Canadian companies in India and highlighted the reciprocal contributions made by the Indian diaspora to Canadian society.

PM Modi and PM Carney identified trade, energy, space, clean technologies, fertilisers, and critical minerals as key areas for enhanced cooperation.

He also congratulated PM Carney on his recent electoral victory, expressing a desire to work closely with the new government to elevate the India-Canada partnership.

PM Modi invited Canadian companies to explore fresh investment opportunities in India, particularly as global dynamics shift.

The Indian Prime Minister also emphasised the importance of the Indo-Canadian community, noting the 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and one million Indian citizens residing in Canada as a strong bridge between the two nations.

PM Carney is actively mending ties that his predecessor’s administration had strained.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law.”

PM Modi further added, “PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship. Areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilisers and more offer immense potential in this regard.

The meeting marked a positive step in re-energising India-Canada relations, based on shared beliefs in democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.

PM Modi’s G7 participation continues India’s engagement with global powers since its 2019 Biarritz debut.

The two leaders concluded their meeting with a shared vision for cooperation across sectors and a renewed focus on global peace, prosperity, and sustainability.
