PM Modi Joins G7 Leaders For Group Photo; Reaffirms India’s Global Role

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined fellow world leaders for a group photograph at the 51st G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Canada, marking India’s continued presence in shaping global dialogue.

PM Modi described the moment as one of ‘togetherness for global progress’, and said his interactions at the summit focused on shared aspirations and global challenges.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Together for global progress! Productive exchanges with G7 leaders on key global challenges and shared aspirations for a better planet.”

Symbolic photo, strong partnerships

The photograph featured leaders from all G7 nations, including Japan’s PM Shigeru Ishiba, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Canada’s Mark Carney, the UK’s Keir Starmer, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, EU President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Leaders of invited nations such as South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and South Africa also joined the photo, along with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and World Bank President Ajay Banga.

US President Donald Trump left the summit early due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

PM Modi held several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

His meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz focused on enhancing cooperation in IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, defence, and counter-terrorism.

This was their first meeting since Chancellor Merz assumed office, and it marked 25 years of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

With South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, PM Modi explored cooperation in green hydrogen, shipbuilding, technology, and culture, reaffirming the India-Korea Special Strategic Partnership.

In his first meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Prime Minister Modi discussed collaboration in pharmaceuticals, digital innovation, science, and regional issues concerning the Global South.

He also held talks with Australian PM Anthony Albanese, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting India’s global engagements.

India & the global south

PM Modi emphasised that India’s participation in the G7 also aimed to represent the voice of the Global South.

In a post on X, he wrote, “Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

The G7 Summit, comprising the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the EU, serves as a forum for addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

This was PM Modi’s sixth consecutive G7 participation, underlining India’s growing diplomatic footprint and its role as a key contributor to international stability and progress.
