Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome in Jakarta on Tuesday as he commenced his official visit to Indonesia, the first leg of his three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

The visit aims to reinforce the longstanding partnership between India and Indonesia and expand cooperation across strategic and economic sectors.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to the Merdeka Palace, enthusiastic schoolchildren lined the route and waved the national flags of India and Indonesia to welcome him.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto warmly welcomed Prime Minister Modi with an embrace, and the two leaders observed the national anthems of both countries during the official ceremonial reception.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Prabowo Subianto to strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established in 2018.

The leaders will discuss cooperation in defence, maritime security, critical minerals, food security, trade, investment and the digital economy, while reviewing progress under the partnership.

President Subianto personally received PM Modi at Jakarta airport on Monday, reflecting the importance Indonesia places on bilateral ties.

PM Modi thanked him for the warm welcome and expressed confidence that their discussions would further deepen relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Prabowo Subianto will also visit the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple complex, where they are expected to announce the start of restoration work to further strengthen the cultural ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi is making his fourth visit to Indonesia and his first bilateral visit since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

Following his engagements in Indonesia, the Prime Minister will continue his diplomatic tour with high-level visits to Australia and New Zealand.
