PM Modi, Indonesian President Prabowo To Hold Bilateral Talks On Defence And Maritime Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday for bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation across several strategic sectors.

The agenda includes defence collaboration, maritime security, critical minerals, food security and the digital economy as both nations seek to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Prime Minister Modi at Jakarta airport on Monday after the Indian leader arrived for the first leg of his three-nation visit covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

The rare airport reception reflected the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries.

During the meeting, the two leaders will assess the progress achieved since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.

The visit also marks Prime Minister Modi’s first bilateral trip to Indonesia since the partnership was upgraded and his fourth overall visit to the country.

After the official talks, Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo will travel to Yogyakarta to visit the Prambanan Temple complex, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Prime Minister said the visit would further strengthen the deep-rooted cultural links shared by the two nations. He also said he looked forward to meeting members of the Indian community during his stay.

India’s Ambassador to Indonesia said both leaders will likely announce the commencement of restoration work at the historic temple complex and reaffirm their shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo last met in New Delhi during the Indonesian leader’s visit to India, where both countries signed several agreements to expand cooperation in strategic and economic sectors.
