Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an online threat targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before his official visit to Australia.
The probe followed a threatening comment on a post promoting the Melbourne Meets Modi event.
The Australian reported that an account using the name Abu Mustafa posted the message.
The comment stated, “The rooftops of the stadium better close during the event, or he will be coming to Australia for his death.”
Citing sources familiar with the investigation, the report said authorities have traced the IP address linked to the post.
Investigators are examining the message and assessing possible criminal offences.
The alleged threat surfaced days before PM Modi’s visit to Australia. He is expected to attend bilateral meetings and community programmes, including the Melbourne event.
Anthony Albanese welcomed PM Modi for the Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit from July 8-10.
The Australian Prime Minister’s Office said Albanese will host PM Modi in Melbourne during the summit.
The visit will strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and expand cooperation in key strategic sectors. It described India as the world’s fourth-largest and one of the fastest-growing economies, calling it a vital economic partner for Australia.
The statement noted Albanese last met PM Modi at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Albanese said, “I am honoured to welcome my friend Prime Minister Modi to Australia for our Annual Leaders’ Summit.”
The Australian Prime Minister added that the partnership promotes peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
