Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Bishkek on Monday and offered floral tributes to the national leader.
PM Modi had inaugurated Gandhi’s statue at the memorial during his 2015 visit to Kyrgyzstan.
The Prime Minister later said Gandhi’s principles would continue to shape people’s thoughts and inspire generations around the world.
After paying homage, PM Modi spent time with members of the Indian community who had assembled at the memorial to greet him.
The diaspora welcomed the Prime Minister with patriotic slogans, including ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’.
The reception featured cultural presentations by people from Kyrgyzstan, which PM Modi watched with appreciation.
Yoga practitioners further marked the occasion by showcasing yoga as part of the welcome programme.
PM Modi arrived in Bishkek on Sunday for a two-day diplomatic visit centred on important regional engagements. His programme includes participation in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit and the inauguration ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
Kyrgyzstan’s Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Adylbek Kasymaliev, welcomed PM Modi after he arrived in the capital.
The Prime Minister will likely meet President Sadyr Zhaparov and several other leaders on the sidelines of the SCO gathering.
Before departing for Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, PM Modi said India would continue to play an active and constructive role within the SCO. He identified security, connectivity and opportunity as key pillars of India’s regional vision and stressed the need for cooperation against terrorism, separatism and extremism.
PM Modi expressed confidence that his Central Asian engagements would strengthen strategic partnerships, promote civilisational connections and encourage collective efforts towards peace, stability and prosperity.
