Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the increasing enthusiasm among young people in Uzbekistan for India’s cultural and literary heritage.

PM Modi visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies on Sunday and interacted with students and scholars of Indology.

During the engagement, PM Modi highlighted the long history of cultural and educational exchanges between India and Uzbekistan and stressed the role of educational institutions in bringing their societies closer.

The students presented recitations of poems written by PM Modi, creating an emotional moment for the Prime Minister.

After the visit, PM Modi shared his experience on X and said the centre offered an insight into the vibrant interest in Indology in Uzbekistan.

An Indologist at the event spoke about the strong affection for India among Uzbek people and described Indian culture as an important part of the country’s cultural landscape. She pointed to the popularity of Indian art and traditions and recommended the Ramayan and Mahabharat to those seeking a deeper understanding of India.

PM Modi discussed Tamil literature and drew attention to the ancient text Tirukkural. He further proposed translating the classical work into Uzbek, saying such an initiative could create another bridge between Indian and Uzbek cultural traditions.

The representatives at the event welcomed the proposal and expressed their willingness to explore the idea.

The university interaction formed part of PM Modi’s two-day state visit to Uzbekistan.

During talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Kuksaroy Presidential Palace, the two sides discussed trade, investment, defence, critical minerals, healthcare, education, agriculture, tourism, space, digital infrastructure and people-to-people relations.
