Nepal’s devastating floods have claimed 903 lives, while authorities continue to recover bodies from rivers and other disaster-hit locations.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that officials recovered 272 bodies in Chitwan, making the southern district the worst-affected area in terms of fatalities.
Officials in Chitwan buried most of the recovered bodies at Devghat, where the Kali Gandaki and Trishuli rivers meet, to prevent potential health hazards.
Before carrying out the burials, authorities collected DNA samples to help identify the deceased at a later stage.
Officials have placed other unidentified bodies in 21 hospitals across several districts and asked families to consult government records to assist the identification process.
The NDRRMA said 4,247 people remain unaccounted for, including 592 foreign nationals.
Authorities are searching for 933 workers employed at hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors.
Rescue teams, supported by technical personnel from India and China, are attempting to reach people believed to be trapped inside tunnels at several hydropower facilities.
The floods have left personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force unaccounted for after the disaster struck areas near the Nepal-China border.
The disaster has injured 267 people, while 156 injured survivors have already completed their treatment and left the hospital.
Authorities have rescued 10,451 people so far, including 252 foreign nationals.
Nepal Army personnel have used aerial operations to evacuate 3,344 Nepali citizens from affected areas.
The government has deployed 20,819 security personnel to conduct search, rescue and relief operations.
The deployment includes 8,722 Nepal Army personnel, 7,894 Nepal Police personnel and 4,203 Armed Police Force personnel as authorities continue efforts to locate missing people and assist communities affected by the floods.
