Finance Ministers and central bank chiefs representing the world’s major economies have arrived in Asheville, North Carolina, for a two-day meeting focused on strengthening the global economy.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is chairing the discussions as Washington seeks to make economic growth a central theme of its year-long G20 presidency.
Bessent has said that policymakers and business leaders will examine measures capable of generating stronger and more sustainable economic expansion.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh travelled with Bessent to Asheville ahead of the meeting.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reached Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina on Sunday before joining the G20 engagements.
India’s Finance Ministry said Sitharaman will represent the country at the Finance Ministers’ meeting and related discussions. Her participation, however, comes as G20 members assess ways to strengthen investment, improve economic resilience and address emerging global risks.
The US has identified stronger global growth, persistent economic imbalances, sovereign debt vulnerabilities and resilient supply networks as major areas for discussion.
The economic consequences of the Iran conflict will likely feature prominently, particularly after higher energy and commodity prices and interruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington is likely to push for stronger economic pressure on Iran, although differences among members over sanctions and business ties with Tehran may hinder a unified approach.
Trade policy could prove equally challenging, with the US advocating greater reliance on productivity, innovation and investment rather than subsidies and excess industrial production.
G20 participants will examine the debt challenges facing developing nations and identify barriers that limit private-sector investment.
Business and technology executives will join discussions on policies and regulations that can encourage new investment.
The Asheville talks will help shape preparations for the G20 leaders’ summit, which US President Donald Trump will host in Miami in December.
